Crop problems

A crop that stays full or swollen is a sign, not a diagnosis. Infection, trichomoniasis, obstruction, dehydration, systemic illness and feeding errors are possible causes.

How to recognise it

  • Crop remains enlarged longer than expected, feels abnormal or develops a sour smell.
  • Regurgitation, poor feeding response, dehydration, depression or weight loss.
  • A burn may cause red skin, blistering or later leakage through the crop wall.

Usual treatment approach

  • Stop adding food to a crop that is not emptying and obtain experienced veterinary/rescue guidance; incorrect emptying can cause aspiration.
  • A veterinarian may examine crop contents, correct dehydration and temperature, relieve obstruction and treat confirmed infection.
  • Burns, tears and fistulas frequently require pain relief, wound care and surgical repair.
  • El tratamiento para un buche en estasis suele ser medicamentos que promuevan la motilidad del digestivo como el primperan o donperidona y nistatina para que no fermente el buche.
