Collision/trauma
Window strikes, vehicles, falls and other impacts can cause concussion, internal bleeding, eye injury, fractures or air-sac damage even when no wound is visible.
How to recognise it
- Stunned or unusually still behaviour, closed eyes, poor balance, head tilt, circling or seizures.
- Blood at the beak or nostrils, eye swelling, unequal pupils, bruising or difficult breathing.
- A dangling wing or leg, abnormal angle, inability to stand or reluctance to move suggests musculoskeletal injury.
Usual treatment approach
- Place in a small ventilated box lined with a towel, keep dark and quiet, minimise handling and seek urgent professional assessment.
- Do not force food or water into a dazed or poorly coordinated bird because it may aspirate and may worsen internal bleeding.
- Usual veterinary care may include oxygen, warmth, fluids, pain relief, imaging, wound care and fracture stabilisation or surgery.
